The List

As do all farmers, we have an ongoing list of plans and projects that stretches far into the future.  I'm going to create a Master List here, and it will be sure to change and grow as we think of new things we'd like to or need to do, and as we begin work on (and complete!) some of the projects listed.

On the Farm, in the next 12 months:
* make all feed for layers & hogs
* build addition onto feed room to cover and incorporate Harvestore unloader
* apply for AWA Good Husbandry Grant for building mobile coops
* construct two additional mobile chicken coops
* increase laying hens to 400
* begin and complete fencing project for hogs' over-wintering area with wider laneways
* put cover on the high tunnel
* move laying hens into high tunnel for the winter (November or early December)
* string lights in high tunnel
* build three more shade huts for hogs
* build run-in shed for horses
* build run-in shed suitable for sheep
* find a few feeder lambs (no breeding for now - see five year plan)
* increase bee yard to 10 hives
* plant sugar maples along roadways and oaks as shade trees near hog areas
* plant more apple trees
* get new Belted Galloway bull
* increase sow numbers to 12 (currently 8)

Household, in the next 12 months:
* hold the first annual Winter Solstice Bonfire

* plant 9 blueberry bushes (and move 2 existing bushes) in new garden area

* create new garden area (build raised beds, prepare no-till beds)

* prepare no-till beds for asparagus and rhubarb

* plant asparagus & rhubarb
* build a teepee in the garden
* make an education decision for Thatcher (subject to change, of course)
* learn to sew
* render lard and use for baking & etc
* fertilize and make no-till beds around apple trees

On the Farm, in the next 5 years:
* buy and install an evaporator in the feed room for making maple syrup
* increase sheep herd to include a ram and ewes
* increase bee yard to 20 hives
* continue planting maples, oaks, apples and blueberries
* plant raspberries and stone fruit trees
* expand garden to a market garden
* incorporate draft horses into market garden
* continue thinning hedgerows and clearing invasives
* meat, veg & fruit CSA (small number of shares)

Household, in the next 5 years:
* FAMILY COW!!  Make butter, yogurt, cheese...

On the Farm, in the next 10 years:
* continue planting trees
* finally hire help?  ha ha ha...
